Security experts found that the devices – manufactured in China, and rebadged by multiple companies around the world – are vulnerable to a simple hack that could allow a hacker to track their location, and even secretly listen in via the microphone.

If an app gives you the option of turning off its access to your microphone I expect it to do precisely that – not to keep pulling audio from the built-in mic regardless.

The Chrome web browser can be exploited to allow remote websites to secretly spy upon your conversations, and record everything that you say.
But it doesn’t sound like Google is interested in addressing the potential serious privacy issue.
