Can a sandbox protect against ransomware?

« Other questions

Apart from using the best advice to protect against malware (keep your machine and anti-virus up to date), is running your browser in a sandbox a significant additional protection against malware and (in particular) ransomware?

My concern is to protect attached drives and storage (which includes backup drives) from ransomware attack. Yes, I could physically detach the backup drives to protect them but this is laborious and also open to error if you have daily backups.

I use Chrome (mostly) and it runs in its own sandbox. Is there any benefit in running Chrome in another sandbox (like Avast sandbox or Sandboxie)?

Being paranoid doesn’t mean that ransomware isn’t out to get you.

Great site Graham. Very informative.
